Branch Executive

President
Don Martin
Don was born in Haileybury. He is a Veteran, having joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1982 serving in Germany, Pettawawa, and Shilo. His military career included 7 years with the regular Force, and 3 years with the Algonquin Regiment.
Don played hockey with the Legion sponsored hockey team, the 54’s, and in the 80/81 season won the all Ontario Provincial Championship.
In 1995 Don joined the Haileybury Legion and over the years served in a number of capacities, as Sgt. At Arms and various committee chairs and positions. He was elected 2nd VP in 2022, President in 2023, and Zone K1 Commander in 2025

Past President
Rick Willett
Retired and happily married. One son and two step daughters. Will have been a Legion member for 40 yrs. next year. Currently on executive for Branch 54 as Past President. I have held the positions of President, many executive positions and past executive of Royal Candain Legion District "K". Had thirty year career with LCBO and managed the Cobalt store followed by the Haileybury store. Retired in 2003 and have had part time jobs before and after LCBO. Member of The Rotary Club of Temiskaming Sores and Area. Enjoy family time, sports and volunteer time.

1st Vice President & Branch Service Officer
Hank Moorlag
Although Hank has in excess of 25 years service with Legion Branches in other parts of Canada, he joined Branch 54 after moving from the Yukon four years ago.
He had a 31 year career with the RCMP, serving in remote arctic and northern communities and also in commercial crime investigations. Following retirement from the RCMP, Hank served as the Yukon’s Ombudsman and Information & Privacy Commissioner for 10 years.
As Branch 54’s Service Officer, Hank tends to the needs of veterans and their families. He has also initiated the Branch’s Banner Program that honours war veterans and former military members. And Hank is involved with a range of other activities, including the Breakfast Program, the Renovations Committee, writing grant applications, managing the Branch’s website, and generally helping out where he can. Hank was awarded a “Throw of Thanks” in recognition of his service to the Branch.

2nd Vice President
Christine Gauvreau
Christine has been a member of Branch 54 for 16 years and has served on the Executive Committee for the past 10 years. She is deeply passionate about her involvement with the Legion, motivated by a strong desire to contribute to the community.
She currently serves as 2nd Vice President, and chairs the Sports Committee, the latter role she has embraced for the past 5 years.

Secretary
Kathryn Pirie
A native of northern Ontario, Kathryn was born and raised in a large family in South Porcupine and enjoyed an idyllic childhood growing up on the Dome Mine property. After finishing law school, she and husband settled in New Liskeard where she has practiced as a litigation lawyer for 37 years. Although she has only been a member of the Haileybury Legion Branch 54 for 3 years, her father was a proud Legion member until his death, having served in WW 2 on the corvettes as Chief Petty Officer. As a child and adult, Kathryn and her entire family celebrated many family events at the South Porcupine Legion, Branch 287, including weddings, receptions, anniversaries, funerals, wakes, celebrations of life, New Years parties, and of course, Christmas parties with Santa Claus. The Legion holds a warm place in Kathryn’s heart and her volunteer work with Branch 54 brings her much joy and friendship. She is currently the chair of the Poppy Committee, the Secretary of Branch 54, a member of the Executive, the Centennial Committee, and helps on a regular basis with weekend breakfasts, the St Patty’s day celebration, and in any other way that she can, when requested.

Membership/Honours & Awards, Bingo
Georgina McNaught
Georgina was born and raised in New Liskeard and moved to Haileybury in 1996. She worked in the Billing Department at Northern Telephone and retired after 30 years of dedicated service.
Georgina joined Branch 54 in 1988 and has been an active member of the Executive since 2015. She currently serves as the Branch’s Membership Chair, Honours & Awards Chair and Bingo Chair.
As Membership Chair, Georgina collects all dues, conducts the “Early Bird” Campaign, processes new applications and keeps an up-to-date register of all Branch Members. In addition, she provides regular communication with the Membership regarding upcoming meetings and special events.
As Honours & Awards Chair, Georgina coordinates the annual presentation of Service Pins and Long-Service Medals to members. She makes recommendations to the Executive regarding local awards, such as Legionnaire of the Year, as well as Provincial/Dominion Command Awards such as Life Memberships and the Meritorious Service Medal.
As Bingo Chair, Georgina coordinates volunteers to assist with our monthly Bingos held at Lucky 7 Bingo Hall in New Liskeard. She also represents the Branch at the South Temiskaming Bingo Hall Association’s monthly meetings. The Branch raises approximately $10,000 annually from our monthly Bingo. These funds are donated back to our community and support such worthy causes as the Army Cadet Program, Junior Golf, local food banks, youth sports and annual school bursaries.
In addition to her work on the Executive, Georgina has been a dedicated member of the Pipe Band (formerly the Haileybury Highlanders and now Temiskaming District Pipes & Drums) for the past 36 years. She started out as a Tenor Drummer, followed by the Snare Drum and now plays the Bass Drum. She is also the Pipe Band’s Treasurer.
In 2022, Georgina was named Legionnaire of the Year for her dedication to the Branch. On Remembrance Day, 2024 she was bestowed with a Life Membership in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the Branch and her dedication to the purposes and objects of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Georgina enjoys volunteering her time with our very successful Breakfast Program and has been involved since it started in June 2023. She not only helps out in the kitchen with the Pipe Band on a monthly basis, but also looks after all of the ordering / picking up of the necessary supplies.

Renovations Committee Chair
Dennis McCarty
Dennis is a veteran, having served with the Algonquin Regiment reserves in Haileybury and has been a member of Branch 54 for 48 years.
Following retirement as a senior executive from the telecommunications industry after 37 years service, Dennis operated his own consulting business for 5 years.
Dennis was instrumental in initiating our Branch’s breakfast offering.
He performs a leadership role on our executive and chairs the renovations committee along with the annual Greenskeeper Willy golf tournament.

Poppy Campaign Chair

Youth Education Chair
Daniel Lemire
Dan has been a Legion member for 8 years and has served on the Executive as Poppy Chair. For the past two years he has acted as liaison with the schools on Remembrance programs and activities.
He is a Veteran, having served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 5 years, specializing as a fire fighter and having been posted in North Bay, Halifax, Borden, and St. Jean, QC. Following his service he was the Fire Chief for the municipality of James Bay, QC for 7 years.
From 1985 to 2022 Dan was in the insurance and investments field.
Now in retirement, Dan keeps busy pursuing his passion for hunting and fishing, and of course his volunteer time with Branch 54.

Sgt-At-Arms and Cadet Liaison
Garett Hunting
Garett was born CFB Greenwood . He is a Veteran, following four + generations having joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1991 Algonquin Regiment serving in Pettawawa, and Gagetown in his military career spent numerous tastings in both Infantry and Armoured Battle Schools as part of the instructor cadre.
Garett has taken this knowledge and experience in training to both his Municipal Law Enforcement and Fire Service activities being provincially and nationally certified instructor. 28 yrs as a volunteer firefighter stationed at Station 1 TSFD Capt/Training officer.
Garett also trains multiple other Temiskaming Fire Departments a passion to share and encourage the next generation of firefighters and leaders.
Married and Loved since 1993 he is a Driver/Equipment Operator for a great local company Phippen Waste Management
Garett joined the Haileybury Legion and over the years served as a volunteer , Now as Sgt. At Arms he strives to uphold the tradition and values of those who held the position before He was elected Br 54 in 2023, Sgt At Arms District K in 2025
